This is a TERM (anticipatory permanent), full-time position, working 75 hours bi-weekly.

Reporting to the Head of Surficial Geology, the surficial geologist is a key member of the Surficial Geology unit of the Yukon Geological Survey (YGS). The incumbent is responsible for conducting original scientific research on various aspects of Yukon's surficial geology, including but not limited to: mapping of surficial materials and permafrost, surficial geochemical surveys, aggregate inventories, monitoring of geohazards, and co-ordinating analytical work to integrate with field-based studies. They are also responsible for compiling and interpreting the results of their research, preparing geological reports and maps for publication and presentation, and providing scientific advisory services to prospectors, exploration and mining companies, communities, first nations, government agencies, land use planning commissions and public.

Essential Qualifications

  • M.Sc. degree in Earth Sciences with specialization in Quaternary geology;
  • Experience working in a surficial geology environment, with preference given to candidates with knowledge of Yukon's surficial geology;
  • Experience interpreting surficial geology features using remotely sensed data;
  • Experience creating presentations and engaging in public speaking to a variety of audiences;
  • Experience writing technical reports and generating maps using GIS software.
  • Experience collecting and interpreting geochemical data would be an asset.

Candidates who have a combination of education, training and experience equivalent to the essential qualifications listed above may be equally considered.

  • Interpersonal and analytical skills and ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external partners and clients;
  • Excellent communication skills, including an ability to present complex information to non-technical audience;
